The Startup India Scheme, launched in 2016 by the Government of India, is a flagship initiative aimed at empowering startups through innovation, design, and technology.
Its mission is to drive product innovation, boost economic development, and generate employment opportunities across the country.
Under this initiative, eligible businesses can obtain recognition from the
Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), unlocking a wide range of benefits including tax exemptions, easier compliance, and fast-tracked IPR support.
The DPIIT acts as the central coordinating and monitoring authority, while the
Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) manages funding support through the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS).
Benefits of Registering as a Startup with DPIIT
The Government of India strongly supports the startup ecosystem by offering multiple incentives that promote innovation, job creation, and business scalability.
- Exemption from tax on excess investment received above fair market value. Useful during angel and venture capital funding rounds.
- Individuals can claim exemption on long-term capital gains (from sale of residential property) if the amount is invested in a DPIIT-recognized startup.
- Eligible startups can enjoy 100% income tax exemption for 3 consecutive years out of the first 10 years since incorporation.
